The school Council consists of two students per form who act as the council representatives for that form. Each year group also has two representatives taken from the form reps.
The year reps sit on the School Council as they would in the cabinet in a Government and the Form reps sit on the Parliament as they would as an elected MP.
The School Council helps to coordinate various charity events through ACiS (active citizens in schools) and puts forward ideas to the Head teacher.
The form reps run the ACiS hour collection and pass through the sheets, enabling the school to monitor the number of hours the students have accumulated.
Students can be elected more than once to form or year rep and they can be elected more than once. The criterion is best person for the job. Form reps are expected to take on various responsibilities within the form, egg reporting back from meetings, collection of hours, coordinating year charities, helping with various whole school events.
The School Council has recently agreed that in future, form reps will sign a contract of work so that they know what is expected of them, students can be removed from the Council or Parliament if they fail to do their job. This year students have represented the school at the Nationwide Voluntary Endeavour awards in Norwich, attended a bullying course in London, started a Bank as well as running the Talent show, Senior Citizens Party, Race for life and various Non Uniform days. They have sent £4,500 to charity.
Next year it is hoped all form reps will have their photos on the Council notice board, outside Centre Point and on the school website.
The council also coordinates the TIC (Talking in Confidence) project. This project is a form of peer mentoring and trains year 10 students in basic counselling techniques. The students who wear TIC badges then man an office where students can come and talk if they feel unhappy, bullied, scared etc. The students’ photographs are displayed in form and year areas so that students know who will help them. |
