Gold Duke of Edinburgh

Students complete Gold Duke of Edinburgh

The Year 13 Gold Duke of Edinburgh group completed their Assessment which started near Thetford on Thursday 6 September and ended in Cambridge on Monday 10 September. The group did extremely well considering the nicer summery conditions made way for wind and rain. The group travelled by Canoe for up to 8 hours a day and camped overnight along the way. As part of the assessment, the group had to plan and navigate their way between the two locations.

All students learnt to canoe with Anglia Adventures on their practice expedition back in May; during the Assessment the group had to demonstrate their learned skills including the safety skills they required to go off exploring the quiet rivers of East Anglia.  They discovered some of the natural hidden rivers that can only be accessed by canoes, with opportunities to spot wildlife and occasional fallen trees to be negotiated.  The groups also travelled through open Fenland many miles from the nearest road.

The participants used top quality lightweight canoes, dry bags and safety barrels. This really was an enjoyable adventure despite the weather at times.

We are extremely proud of all the students involved and are pleased to announce that they all successfully passed the expedition section of their Gold Award! Hopefully the whole group will now complete their awards and will be off to St James Palace this time next year!
