THE JACK HUNT SCHOOL LANGUAGE COLLEGE

Languages Colleges

On Tuesday 17 th June 2003, Jack Hunt School Language College was officially opened by John Simpson, CBE. In his speech, recounting experiences as a world affairs editor for the BBC he underlined the importance of language learning. He made reference to how wonderful it is that over 20 languages are represented at Jack Hunt School and described the school as ‘go ahead’ and ‘ambitious’.

Suzanne Noble, the then Language College Director, talked about the aims of the Language College including Key Stage 2 language learning, an increased range of languages taught, state of the art resources, community classes and an increase in graduate teacher training.

All guests including John Simpson and his wife were then taken on a tour of the Language College where language staff taught a range of lessons in French, German Japanese, Spanish and Urdu. There was a primary school lesson with students from Thorpe Primary School, an adult learners class in German, sixth form lessons in French and Spanish and other language lessons involving students across the year groups.

Since those beginnings we have gone made some significant achievements:

gaining International School Award in 2004
expanding our primary teaching programme to nine schools
chairing the Peterborough primary languages steering group
three highly successful VI Form International Conferences
leading Peterborough network meetings for HoDs in Languages
a joint Languages and Technology CILT project with schools in France and Germany
intensive days for Gifted and Talented linguists
