Jack Hunt’s Healthy Budget Recipe Competition 2021

The School’s first healthy low-cost recipe competition was open to Jack Hunt staff and students. The aim was to create a healthy recipe with a budget of no more than £5. The entries received included a range of cuisines from around the world, consisting of 25 different countries.

Head Chef and Catering Manager, Mrs Sloocombe had a difficult task judging the 30 entries, she commented “all of the entries are amazing! Although, it was difficult to select 3 winners, the 3 winning recipes were clear and precise, with step-by-step guidance on how to produce them.”

Winners are as follows:

Nicole Nimmo (year 9)’s spiced prawn soup was awarded first place and was gifted £50 Queensgate vouchers, Pork Souvlaki by Adam Melton (year 9) gained second place in this competition and was gifted £30 Queensgate vouchers and Kyla O’Connor’s Carbonara obtained third place with a gift of £20 Queensgate vouchers. All 30 participants received a Headteacher’s postcard and a lovely prize for their submissions.

Staff winners were Mr Nawaz’s Pakistani tarka daal and Mrs Sithole’s Chinese stir fry, both received a free restaurant meal.

Mrs Sloocombe, recreated the 3 winning recipes and served these at a Chef’s Table luncheon, where the 3 above-named students plus one of their friends, both headteachers Ms Kilbey and Mrs Holley and the School’s International Education Coordinator, Ms Hussain were invited to try these lovely recipes.

As a leaving gift, the 30 recipes have been collated into a heathy budget recipe book with mental health and general well-being tips for our Year 13s to take away with them. The hope is that this book with the many motivational messages will give our students valuable tips to consider in their life after school. Headteacher, Ms Kilbey’s comments to our Year 13’s have been noted in the recipe book, she says, “This gift of a cookbook with recipes from us to you, will help ensure you remain well-nourished if you move away from home for University, training or the world of work. Remember to always take care of yourself in other ways too. Seek help and talk to people if you are struggling in any way, and never doubt what an amazing young person you have grown into. We are very proud of you.”
