Remembering Sgt Hunter: Jack Hunt Pupils Mark ANZAC Day in Peterborough

Jack Hunt School Pupils Honour Fallen Heroes on ANZAC Day
Students from Jack Hunt School joined veterans, dignitaries, and members of the Peterborough community to commemorate ANZAC Day at a special service held at the graveside of Sergeant Thomas Hunter in Broadway Cemetery.
More than a century ago, Sgt Hunter, an Australian soldier, passed away in Peterborough after suffering injuries during the First World War. His bravery and sacrifice have been honoured ever since, with thousands attending his funeral in 1916. This year, pupils from Year 7 continued that tradition of remembrance by participating in the ceremony, thousands of miles from Sgt Hunter's homeland.
During the service, pupils Sky Moss-Glennon, Arya Rajbhandari, Kayden Tavares, David Habila, and Hannah Yousaf represented the school. They contributed heartfelt poetry they had written in class about Sgt Hunter’s life and the importance of remembering ANZAC contributions. Flowers were laid at his graveside as a mark of respect.
Speaking at the service, Hannah Yousaf said:
"It is important for us children to remember. Not many people know about Sgt Hunter, so we all came together to pay our respects. It is important for people to remember."
Sky Moss-Glennon, who read a poem during the ceremony, added that learning about Sgt Hunter’s life had been a powerful experience for the group.
The Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Marco Cereste, praised the pupils' involvement, highlighting the significance of young people engaging with history. He said:
"It is not just about remembering the wonderful things Sgt Hunter did for us, but also about learning from history and ensuring we don’t make the same mistakes."
Graham Casey, chairman of the Peterborough branch of the Royal British Legion, also emphasised the importance of remembrance:
"The British Legion is the Custodian of Remembrance, and it is vital we keep the memory of people like Sgt Hunter alive. Having young people involved is key to ensuring these sacrifices are never forgotten."
The Jack Hunt School community is proud to have taken part in this moving tribute, ensuring that the bravery and sacrifice of those who served continue to be honoured by future generations.
