Jack Hunt School Teacher Inspires Students with After-School Cookery Club

Sidra Hussain, a Business Studies teacher, is bringing a new flavour to education by setting up a thriving after-school cookery club.

With the invaluable support of colleagues Diane Ray and Irene Marshall, the initiative has quickly become a hit with students, blending practical life skills with fun and creativity in the kitchen.

The club offers weekly cooking sessions where students learn to prepare a variety of dishes, building essential culinary skills. These sessions also serve as a platform for students to connect with their peers, fostering teamwork and camaraderie through shared cooking experiences.

Sidra, has organised exciting field trips, including a recent visit to Pizza Express, where students explored the art of pizza-making firsthand. Together, they also run engaging competitions like the Fair Trade Bake-Off, encouraging students to think about ethical choices in food sourcing while showcasing their baking talents.

The teamwork behind the cookery club has been widely praised. "Cooking is a life skill, but it’s also about connection and creativity," Sidra explained. "With Diane and Irene’s incredible help, we’re able to offer students an opportunity to develop confidence, explore their passions, and learn to work together—all while having fun."
