12 lucky students participated in the week-long Firebreak training course aimed at young people who need to build up their confidence and learn new skills.
The students arrived at Stanground Fire Station just in time for breakfast. After a full briefing and getting suited up in their uniforms, students spent the day working together and learning to trust one another. The second day focused on First Aid and the students learned valuable life saving skills.
Midweek started with some action packed drills. The team had to secure and save two dummies inside a dark and smokey house. Working in pairs helped teach them the value of teamwork and allowed them to put their new skills into practice.
The week ended with a Pass Out Parade during which students were able to show off their new skills to friends and family. This included preparing a firehose and demonstrating that they could control it when the powerful jet of water was switched on. The second was to rescue a fellow fireman who was trapped in a two story building.
All the students were awarded certificates by the Fire Brigade and congratulated on their achievement by Matt Oliver from Peterborough Local Authority. Assistant Headteacher, Kerry Cliffe, said, "The boys have been courageous and overcome their fears to make amazing progress. For example, one young man had a fear of heights. The patience, care and kindness of the brigade has been fantastic and we are incredibly proud of our boys."
