Year 9 Student Trains with British Gymnasts

Talented gymnast Chloe had her wish to spend the day with the British women's artistic gymnastics team granted, thanks to the charity Rays of Sunshine** and the British Gymnastic team.

The year 9 student spent the weekend of the 28 February training with the British Gymnastic squad at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Telford, the home of gymnastics.  Chloe, is an elite gymnast, who has been training and competing since she was five years old at the Spiral Gymnastics Club in Peterborough, and was granted her greatest wish by charity Rays of Sunshine.

On Saturday morning Chloe watched and took part in the squad’s training session which lasts about four hours.  Chloe also spent time with three-time Olympian and bronze medallist Beth Tweddle and Commonwealth medallist Claudia Fragapane as well as many of the other gymnasts preparing for the competitions ahead.  She was able to perfect her own skills spending time with Imogen, one of the British Gymnastic artistry coaches, who gave her lots of tips and advice on how to improve her routines to gain those extra points in her competition performances.  As she used the different pieces of apparatus, Chloe chatted to members of the squad, getting lots of tips and hints.

The day ended on a high when the squad sang ‘Happy Birthday’, autographed her gymnastics hoodie and gave her a pair of GB trousers as a gift (it was Chloe’s birthday two days later).

”I could not have wished for a better birthday present, it was an amazing day,” said Chloe. “All the squad and coaches were really friendly and helpful, I learnt so much to help improve my performance and I love the GB trousers they gave me.”

“I would like to thank Rays of Sunshine and British Gymnastics for arranging such a great day and I will treasure the signed hoodie”, she continued.
